Commemt Review

This TV is incredible. Even more surprising is the opposite. I went shopping for a flat for about a year. I almost pulled the trigger Samsung C8000, until I came upon this TV. For all Samsung 3D offers me at least it is still too new to invest in. 10000000-1 This model has a dynamic contrast ratio compared to the Samsung 8,000,0000. Blu-ray (Sony BDP-570) looks and sounds great. DirecTV HD shine too much. The implementation was simple. The only problem I found was the actual time needed to achieve this goal. It took about three weeks, compared to sales. But when he appeared, the magazine turned to me and what I feel at home three days later. If you have full TV that you really enjoy, but do not want to give up $ 3,000 …It is a collection. Moreover, a decent home theater system (I HTSS370 Sony “We to blow out of the room.) I can enjoy a movie night at home, I can not wait for football at school, or enter the NFL! Vizio XVT is intensified by the New!.

Got the new laptop, upgraded to Windows 7 Pro, installed all my software, started to work on it and bang, got blue screens.

Called Asus support (1 hour on the phone waiting) and they blamed it on Windows 7 Pro. So I called MS. They were useless too, but it was not their problem.

Another hour on the phone waiting for Asus to take my call. They made me do a recovery, which was going to take half an hour. Call back if that fails.

Recovery failed. Another hour on the phone waiting for Asus to take my call.

Finally they started suspecting a hardware problem (which was what I told them the first time). I could send the laptop to them, wait for the repair and get the machine back in about a week.

As my previous laptoip was stolen and I waisted already one day installing and one day on the phone with Asus I told them that this was unacceptable.

I called Amazon. They were GREAT! They wanted to send me a new machine right away, which I could have accepted, but it was Saturday, so it would arrive on Tuesday the earliest. So I opted for a refund and went to Best Buy to get a new machine (Gateway, very happy with it so far).

Amazon scheduled for pick up of the Asus and was very kind.

So I’m a happy Amazon customer, but I will never buy an Asus again.

For the people who still consider this laptop: the keyboard is too near to the

screen (have to reach too far) and the keys are cheapy plastic. I had a hard time typing on it.
Read More Detail About Asus K50IJ X8.

I had bought this one because it was small and lightweight for my massive travelling. It is so wonderful that I am finding myself using it as my primary computer. The resolution is outstanding. It is fast and does not stall the way my other computer did. The only thing that is a slight problem is the smaller keyboard but I am almost used to that. I would recommend using a mouse instead of the touch pad. Otherwise you can’t go wrong with this oomputer.
Read More Detail About Asus UL20A A1.

The UL30vt-X1 is the best “bang for the buck” laptop available right now. I did a ton of research before purchasing and believe me, if you’re looking for the best available thin, light and powerful notebook look no further. There are other ultra portables with similar specs but none offer the flexibility of switchable graphics and great gobs of battery life (6-8 hrs. with higher performance settings). Among the negatives are the screen with its limited viewing angle and a fingerprint-prone chassis. To me, these cons are minor so I’ll still rate it 5 stars. I actually purchased the 5600 mAh battery (ASUS 8-Cell Laptop Battery for UL30, UL80, and UL50) and will use it as the primary battery. I’ll use the included 4400 mAh for a spare. Later on this year ASUS plans to release the UL30jt which is basically the same chassis but with an Intel i5 or i7 processor and 1 gigabyte Geforce 310M switchable graphics for about $999. But the release date is still uncertain. However, if you keep waiting for the next latest-and-greatest you never buy a laptop as something new is coming out every six months or so.

RE: Battery life:

After reading a few posts about the battery life I’m concerned that people are spreading myths about Lithium Ion batteries. Some have said that if you feel your not getting the full battery capacity out of your notebook’s battery pack that you should let it discharge fully and charge it fully and repeat this process over several days. This is called “cycling”. Lithium Ion batteries (unlike Nickel Metal Hydride batteries) DO NOT NEED TO BE CONDITIONED OR CYCLED THROUGH CHARGING AND DISCHARGING. Because of the nature of the chemistry, a Lithium Ion battery’s capacity is available immediately and cannot be improved by cycling. Most Lithium Ion battery packs contain “smart circuitry” to prevent over-charging and excessive discharging. However, in some cases the cycling may improve the smart circuitry’s estimation of full and low levels only. The only thing you can do to make your battery last as long as the manufacturer’s stated figure is to run EVERYTHING at low settings. This particular model (UL30VT-X1) comes with the 8-cell 4400 mAh battery. If you need more then you can purchase the bigger battery from Amazon (it’s rated at 5600 mAh). Or, for an even better deal wait and hope for the UL30VT-A1 to come back in stock (this model comes with the high capacity battery for only $50 more). Cycling is only effective for older chemistries such as Nickel Cadmium and Nickel Metal Hydride. Most Lithium Ion packs can be charged and discharged 300-500 times depending on the quality of the battery.
Read More Detail About Asus UL30Vt X1.

EDIT: See below for my review, but the short story is that the trackpad is terrible. After talking with Asus tech support I decided I really didn’t want to go through the process of shipping it back, waiting for a new one, and hoping that the problem was not a design flaw. After reading a number of reviews from various sites confirming just how bad the trackpad is I decided I didn’t want to deal with it. I ended up getting a Sony Y series laptop, which have just come out and are on sale right now for less than this one! With my student discount the Sony Y cost only 665! Without the student discount it is 699, although I’ve heard that if you do the online chat you can convince them to give you a coupon on top of that. I just got it today and the build quality is WAY nicer. Don’t get me wrong, the Asus is good, but the Sony is great! If you can live with around 6.5 hours of battery vs 9.5 (as measured by [...]) then I absolutely recommend the Sony Y series over the Asus UL30A series. The Sony has all the same specs, plus bluetooth and ExpressCard. I can’t stress enough how much nicer the Sony is. Take a look at some pictures to see what I’m talking about. Get it while it’s on sale!

ORIGINAL REVIEW:

I did a lot of research before I ended up buying this laptop. I needed something with great battery life and decent performance, and after using a netbook for the last year I needed something a little more powerful. I’ll list my impressions on the different aspects of the laptop:

Display – I read a lot of reviews complaining about the viewing angles of the display being very poor, but I think they are just fine. The glossy display is actually mush less of a nuisance than I thought it would be, and the colors are pretty good (although not terrific). All in all I’ve happy with the display, although because I had low expectations maybe I was easy to please here.

Keyboard – I really like the chicklet layout of the keyboard. The keyboard isn’t as nice as Sony or Apple chicklet style keyboards, but I still find typing to be very easy and pleasant. Also the keys don’t feel very firm and have a very short travel, especially when compared to my Dell D620 that I use for work. I haven’t noticed a problem with keyboard flex, although it does have a little. Overall I still feel this is a good keyboard.

Trackpad – The trackpad is terrible. Honestly the worst I’ve ever used. This was my biggest concern on this laptop because I don’t like trackpads that are flush with the laptop’s body. I prefer to have a more traditional trackpad that has its own distinct area. Physically I actually like the trackpad a lot more than I thought I would. I would still prefer a matte finish and some kind of separation from the rest of the body, but overall the trackpad has exceeded my expectations physically and the long, single button is about 100 times better than I imagined based on pictures and other reviews. The real problem is with the drivers (I assume, could be a hardware design defect but I doubt it). When you touch the pad with any kind of force it detects your single finger as TWO fingers and then the mouse stops moving. This causes some really jumpy mouse movement unless you touch the trackpad with VERY light pressure the whole time you use it. Also, when you try to do a tap-click it you have to tap REALLY lightly or it will detect your tap as a two-finger tap. I uninstalled the drivers that came with the laptop and installed the generic Synaptic drivers and that helped a little with the mouse jumpiness, but it didn’t help with the tap-clicking. I’m going to give Asus a call and keep searching forums for some kind of fix to this, but if I can’t get it resolved it makes an otherwise great laptop way too frustrating to use every day.

Battery Life – Amazing. That’s all I need to say.

Overall design – This thing is THIN. Really, I knew it was going to be thin, but when I got it and held it for the first time I was still thinking “Whoa, this is thin.” Otherwise the aluminum top feels really nice, but it’s a shame they didn’t use that same aluminum on the inside. Overall I’d say the design looks really nice but does feel a little cheap (especially the plastic they use on the bottom).

Performance – Coming from a netbook I am also easy to please here, but I find the performance to be very good. I haven’t noticed any slowdowns or hiccups even when running 10+ browser tabs and Microsoft Office and Eclipse (for programming). Perfect for my needs.

Other thoughts – This came with a LOT of bloatware and about a million different Asus utilities to do different things that I haven’t figured out yet. I have uninstalled a lot of stuff and will continue trying to figure out what else I can install. Also, the charging cable that comes with this is nice and long and includes cable ties so you can keep it wrapped up if you don’t need the distance.

All in all I feel like this is a really nice laptop that is perfect for me as a student, except for the trackpad. With a bad trackpad the laptop becomes too frustrating to use daily, and so I just can’t recommend it. I give it three stars for now. I’ll keep working on it and update my review if I can get the problem figured out.
Read More Detail About Asus UL30A A2.

Con: not much. minor stuff like resolution could of been higher.

Other Thoughts: I’ve been keeping track of this laptop and notice Newegg had the same laptop going for $999. However, Today Newegg’s price jump on this laptop to $1099. If you are from CA like me, you would have to pay taxes @ Newegg as well… However, Amazon give this baby to me at $999 with no tax!!!! BUY IT SOON if you havn’t!! The price might just get higher!!!!
Read More Detail About Asus N61JQ X1.

There should be a disclaimer here stating that the 12 hrs claimed battery life is hypothetically possible under certain conditions. That means monitor brightness totally down, no wifi, on battery-saving mode (less CPU power), and minimal activity on the user’s end. Contradictory is the fact that on the box and labels it states 10 hrs. Where did 12 hrs come from? At best, expect 8-10 hrs on two energy-saving modes, 5-6 hours on entertainment and high-performance modes.

The trackpad is difficult to use, very rough, and drags. The mouse buttons could have been better designed. It’s one straight single bar so often you find yourself clicking the wrong mouse button. Also it’s a stiff button.

Been using Skype with it a lot and with the built-in mic, the other end sometimes has a hard time hearing me. It’s not the internet connection because I can hear their voice perfectly on the speakers. When speaking at a normal level, if you’re more then 1.5 feet from the mic, your voice begins to dim. Also, you have to be facing the mic directly. At an angle, it just doesn’t pick up as well. Just barely usable IMO.

Aside from those negatives, it’s a very user-friendly laptop. Great wide keyboard. You can run several programs at once and not worry about memory. Great specs overall, can’t complain there.

1080p video is choppy at best, 720p is smooth and playable. Dedicated video card would have helped, but that would mean a thicker laptop and more energy consumption. That’s the trade-off and one I was willing to settle with.
